magione4_thumb Laverda Corse were out in force on the weekend of 8-9 May at the Autodromo dell Umbria in Magione, near Florence. The team’s pit garage was shared by three of Giovanni Laverda’s university friends who had entered a 750 Honda into the 200 mile event. Their Honda expired in practice with four bent valves and Laverda Corse regular Hermann Ansorge stepped in and loaned the boys his spare Barcelona 500cc.

All three Laverdas qualified in the top three slots of the 500cc class and it looked as if a Laverda 1 , 2 and 3 might be on the cards. However, endurance racing rarely goes to plan and in the early stages of the race  Luca, one of the students, crashed Hermann’s bike heavily at the end of the start and finish straight. The damage was extensive but fortunately the rider emerged unscathed.

The next race casualty was the bike ridden by Laverda [snr], Dixon and Ansorge.  A persistent misfire saw the bike delayed in the pits for almost 20 minutes as Piero  Laverda worked tirelessly to solve the problem.  After removing the carbs no less than three times in an intense scramble to get the bike running properly Piero eventually declared that the needle valve was the culprit.  A replacement was installed and Bob Dixon rode the remaining 45 mins of the race to bring the bike home second in class. The other team bike ridden by Pietro Manzalini and Francesco Greggio was ridden faultlessly to a well deserved win consistently lapping much faster than many of the 1000cc entries.

Championship standings in the UEM Vintage Endurance Cup remain the same with Manzalini and Greggio in 1st place and Ansorge, Laverda and Dixon lying 2nd. Next race; Rijeka in August, next team appearance; The Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Oz Laverda spaceframe

Oz Laverda Racing

Here's a YouTube clip of the shake-down outing for Crispin's spaceframe in stealth mode on 20 March 2010 at Eastern Creek, Sydney.  The bike runs a 120 motor with crank twisted to give 180 throws. 7C inlet & 4C exhaust cams.

First race was Easter weekend - the full story of that is in another place. The team came 13th overall in class with a best finishing position of 7th - pretty impressive for their first event!  Here's the video -

Racing update

750_heeled_over_thumbNow that spring is sprung, I thought it would be interesting to find out what some of our racing members are planning this year.  It's also an excellent excuse to re-use this stunning picture of Daniel Wanner's cafe racer styled and tuned SF750 to inspire you to try a track day!

What follows is a quick update from folk who usually provide me with details of their exploits.  If you want to be included, please send words and pics to the webmaster

Racers Fund

  - now known as the ILOC Fund to support Off Road Competition

With the change of subscription payment arrangements - now incorporating Direct Debit for UK members - it is no longer possible to include a donation to the club's Racers Fund.  Instead, a PayPal 'Donate' facility is available on the Membership page.  Simply click on the Donate button and this will enable you to make your contribution to the Fund.

This successful scheme enables members to "sponsor" current Laverda riders. Any club member competing on a Laverda who can prove a start in an off-road competition receives a sum of money (amount varies depending on the fund available). The scheme is administered by ILOC, but the fund is kept quite separate to other club monies. This has helped keep several racers on the track, maintaining a proud Laverda competition tradition.
